English #2: Go ahead and show off
Today, my colleague shared with me a link to training courses from Adobe Creative Cloud. I read through many links and stopped by an article on Behance, "How to write a better bio professional summary". I just scanned the article and then my eyes stop by this line caught my attention, "Go Ahead and Show Off".
I was curious about this title. I am a low-key person, who always tries to avoid showing off and even do not want to take credit for what I do. If I work on any project with others, I never use "I" when talking about the output. I would use "We" instead. It is not because I do not know how to show off, just because I do not like to do so. I am not only unhappy with myself showing off but also unlike people who are showing off and doing personal branding. Because I have a bias that showing off people is someone who doesn't really focus on creating things, just selling things. I am impressed with the original person. This blog is an example. Instead of writing on social media and another attractive blogging platform, I decided to write on Blogger for myself.
But, reading this article changes my mind. Dana Leav-Detrick, director and founder of Brooklyn Resume Studio shared in the article: "I work with a lot of people who do branding professionally, but who can't do it for themselves. It's something that even the highest level of people struggle with. Remember, if you don't promote your skills and talent, no one is going to do it for you. Clients want to read your summary and come away with a sense of confidence that you can do the job". She added: "If writing a professional summary is hard for you, hire someone to write it for you. Sometimes it's easier to tell someone your story and let them make you shine".
Yes, I agree that, if I do not promote my skills and talent, no one is going to do it for me. My friends and colleagues urged me many times to show more on Linkedin and social media what I am doing and not just keep it to myself. But did not hear them. I have been struggling with showing off for a long time. After reading this article, I think I will write more and show what I have done and what I achieved after 8 years of working in the Learning and Development field. Let's see!
